Abstract

Communities living along the Martapura River face environmental health risks, while tuberculosis (TB) remains a public health problem in Banjar Regency. This community service program aimed to describe indoor air quality in the homes of TB patients and survivors and to provide TB prevention education, including an assessment of its effect on knowledge. The program was carried out with the Banjar District Health Office and the Martapura Timur Primary Health Center in two stages, on 20 August and 29 September 2026, in different households. At each stage, temperature, humidity, and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) were measured in bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. Houses with humidity outside the 40–60% RH standard received dehumidifiers, and TB prevention education was delivered directly, supported by hand fans containing TB prevention information. Knowledge of 20 respondents was assessed with a pre-test before and a post-test after the education and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. Of 19 temperature and humidity measurements, 10 (52.6%) were within 40–60% RH, 6 (31.6%) were below, and 3 (15.8%) were above this range. In 13 measurements, PM2.5 ranged from 7 to 95 µg/m³ and PM10 from 13 to 106 µg/m³, with the highest values in kitchens, and 10 of 13 measurements exceeded the national indoor air quality standard (PM2.5 25 µg/m³; PM10 70 µg/m³). After the education, the mean knowledge score increased from 52.67 to 82.33 (p < 0.001). Indoor air quality monitoring combined with education can serve as a promotive and preventive approach in primary care to support TB control in riverbank areas.
